Mumbai is reputed for being the city that never sleeps. Although Mumbaikars once did party till 7 am, a stricter enforcement of licencing laws has quashed that, but it still has the best nightlife in India. Few expats venture north of Juhu, unless they are broke, or dating a Bollywood struggler.

Dubai: Indian expats in the UAE wishing to fly home are now confused about the online submission of their details for repatriation after India introduced a new layer of online procedures for overseas passengers. On Sunday, India announced another layer of online procedures for all international passengers arriving in the country from August 8, particularly to deal with quarantine procedures.
As per the latest guidelines, all travellers should submit a self-declaration form on the online portal or New Delhi Airport at least 72 hours before the scheduled travel. Passengers should also submit the relevant documents on the same site if they wish to avail an exemption from institutional quarantine. While those with compelling reasons or distress need to seek the exemption by applying on the portal at least 72 hours before boarding, others seeking exemption by submitting a negative RT-PCR COVID test report should also upload the report on the portal.
With the Indian authorities deciding to make these new online procedures for the international passengers on the portal live from 12am on August 8, expats trying to fly home from the UAE from Saturday are confused as to how this will impact their journey.

The trick is for governments to keep raising quality of city life for everyone. Once India does it, when the commonplace becomes enjoyable, it will automatically climb up the index for expats. Now they have the weight of research data to back up this knowing incomprehension. And Indians are not alone in their frustration. India, it seems, is one of the worst places in the world to be an expat in, not least because of this skewed work-life balance.
Several reports published this month show that in most respects expats find India a far from pleasing place to work in and bring their families to, even if for a few years. Many end up leaving in less than a year. There are many positives, mostly to do with a low-cost labour economy.
